Aldershot’s long-awaited Centre for Health takes another step nearer reality today with the announcement by The Wilky Group that it has purchased the site from the Ministry of Defence.
And, in a further sign of progress, planning consent has been granted for the demolition of the old water tower on the site.
The land was secured by Wilky several years ago, under a contract to purchase with Defence Estates, the Ministry of Defence land agency. Now Wilky, in a further demonstration of faith in the project, is investing nearly £2m, in addition to the £1m already invested, by completing the purchase in advance of the rest of the project.
This is being done in advance of the signing of the unconditional agreements that will bind Blackwater Valley & Hart Primary Care Trust, and the Army, into the undertaking with Wilky. Signing the agreements is now expected to take place soon.
Says Wilky Chief Executive Malcolm Young: “One of the first results of this early purchase should be seen in the next two months when we will be demolishing the ex-Army water tower on the eastern part of the site.
“Long term, of course, the benefits to Aldershot and the Blackwater Valley will stem from the provision of the largest ‘one-stop,’ multi-function primary healthcare centre in the UK – an outstanding example of the way in which the NHS is now moving ahead.”
