TOWER LANDMARK MAKES WAY FOR HEALTH CENTRE 30-11-2004

Work started in earnest on the site of Aldershot’s new Centre for Health today, when demolition of the water tower began.

Lisa Franklin the 16-year-old Head Girl of The Connaught School, Aldershot, breached the concrete reservoir, designed to hold more than one million litres, with a giant power chisel mounted on a caterpillar-tracked machine.

The 10m high tower – part of Aldershot’s landscape for around 40 years and constructed from 1,000 tonnes of concrete – will take another two weeks to demolish completely. This is the first significant work to take place on the Hospital Hill site.

Malcolm Young, chief executive of The Wilky Group the, Farnborough-based company behind the project, said: “The demolition will be an encouraging sign for the people of Aldershot, who are keen to see the project under way.

“We decided to start the demolition because this will bring forward the day when the centre will open its door to the first patient. It is also a sign of the total confidence in the project that we share with our clients the Blackwater Valley and Hart Primary Care Trust and the Army.”

The Connaught School was invited to take part because it is the only secondary school within the town and Wilky is a strong supporter of its efforts to win specialist school status for Business and Enterprise.

Collard Demolition Ltd of Eversley, Hants are clearing the site for Wilky.
