The Wilky Group today announced that it has chosen Alfred McAlpine as preferred contractor to build the Aldershot Centre for Health.
The full building contract is now being negotiated. Both companies want to sign by November 30, so work on site can begin before Christmas. The project is scheduled for completion in 2007.
Wilky chief executive Malcolm Young stressed: “This start date remains our firm intention, despite being unable to proceed with the original contractor. Detailed design work continued in the interim to minimise delays.
“We have been impressed by Alfred McAlpine’s understanding of our need to make quick progress in negotiations and their willingness to work in partnership to help fulfil the pledge we made to the Blackwater Valley and Hart PCT, the Army and the local community.”
Alfred McAlpine has been undertaking healthcare projects for over 60 years. Alfred McAlpine has been involved in the provision of new healthcare developments from stand alone surgeries to some of the UK's largest new hospitals such as Hereford, Addenbrookes and Stoke Mandeville hospitals. “We look forward to working with the Wilky Group to deliver a healthcare environment that will make a real difference to the community of Aldershot”, says regional director for Alfred McAlpine Rob Kremis.
The 134,500 sq ft Centre for Health is intended as the first phase of development on former Ministry of Defence (MOD) land at Hospital Hill. It will be shared by the civilian and military communities from Hampshire, providing front line healthcare for about 45,000 local people and specialist services for around 250,000 people. Subject to approval by Rushmoor Borough Council, Phase 2 will see a Care Facility, with 81 nursing home beds together with 15 assisted living apartments, on the eastern side of the 5.8-acre site.
This will bring the size of the whole development to some 200,000 sq ft and will give Aldershot and the surrounding areas a unique Health Campus of a kind which developer Wilky believes can become a model for similar multi-purpose, “one stop” healthcare facilities elsewhere in the UK.
