The Wilky Group has handed over control of the Aldershot Centre for Health site to main contractor Alfred McAlpine.
Wilky chief executive Malcolm Young and Alfred McAlpine regional director Rob Kremis met on site today (Wednesday December 14) to mark the transfer with a handshake. Malcolm Young said: “This is a major step forward. Although the public will have seen site clearance and other preparatory work being carried out, McAlpine’s presence on site marks a new phase of the project. “I am delighted that we can end the year on such a positive note.”
Alfred McAlpine began installing site facilities on Monday. Rob Kremis added: “Alfred McAlpine has been undertaking healthcare projects for over 60 years. We look forward to continuing to work with the Wilky Group to deliver a healthcare centre of which both the civilian and the military community of Aldershot can be proud.”
The 134,500 sq ft Centre for Health is intended as the first phase of development on former Ministry of Defence (MOD) land at Hospital Hill. It will be shared by the civilian and military communities from Hampshire, providing front line healthcare for about 45,000 local people and specialist services for around 250,000 people.
John Parker, chairman of Blackwater Valley and Hart Primary Care Trust, described Alfred McAlpine’s move onto the site as a significant moment for the town.
“This new centre will benefit local people by giving them modern surroundings where they can access a wide range of high quality health care,” he added.
Garrison Commander, Colonel Nigel Josling OBE said: “The ACH is the first new building in a series that will see the transformation of not only the military town but also Aldershot itself. I am delighted that work has begun and look forward to seeing a new and prestigious landmark rising in Aldershot.”
Construction of the Centre for Health is expected to be completed by autumn 2007.
